Tobias Bakker, a Dutch researcher, an expert in nuclear energy, and passionate about archaeology, embarks on research on a fragment of an extraterrestrial meteorite discovered in Egypt in the early 1980s. After its discovery, the fragment is rapidly transported under armed escort to the private government laboratory "TETRA" for in-depth research.
As the head of the research department, Tobias is quickly faced with enormous pressure from his superiors, who are determined to obtain rapid results to explore and harness the energy generated by the extraterrestrial fragment. After a series of inconclusive results, the laboratory forbids him from continuing his parallel research, which he believes to be more promising but less profitable.
Frustrated by his repeated failures and having a more advanced private laboratory at home, Tobias makes a bold and irreversible decision. In the early light of a summer morning in 1985, he discreetly steals a sample of the fragment, concealed in a double-padded pocket in his pants behind a pack of chewing gum. Taking advantage of the guards' inattention, he sets off on his bicycle route towards his home, anticipating a major breakthrough in his research.
Along the way, the container holding the sample unscrews slightly, inadvertently releasing a few particles of extraterrestrial radioactive material. In the excitement of the moment, Tobias unknowingly drops a few pieces of chewing gum into the green, damp grass of Amsterdam's Westerpark.
Upon arriving at his home, Tobias realizes that the sealed container holding the fragment is no longer airtight, and he understands that he is contaminated and that his days are numbered. Nevertheless, he locks himself in and works relentlessly, conducting experiments on animals to discover if they can benefit from the energy of the fragment.
A few days later, Tobias dies, leaving behind incomplete research that demonstrates the atomic energy of the fragment can greatly enhance exceptional abilities in certain animal species, thus paving the way for further research on the hyper-evolution of the animal genome.
